Andrea Howells is published, and she has her grandmother, Deb Gasper, to thank.
The 12-year-old Holy Rosary sixth-grade honor student is the author of "Finding Peace and the True Soul," which its publisher, Nicole Langan of Tribute Books of Eynon, says is "targeted at a preteen audience."
Its title character, Peace Saved, Tribute's book description says, "thought she was a girl like any other. She had great friends. She went to school. She daydreamed. But never in her wildest dreams did she think that she would be able to control water. Peace discovers that she is the Light Master, as well as a Godsend of water. To learn more about her powers, she starts attending a school in heaven called Peaceful Harmony. When Peace thinks things can't get any weirder, Grace, a fellow student, loses the Godlove spirit that dwelled in her family for generations. It's up to Peace to save the spirit and fulfill her destiny."
When Mrs. Gasper read "Finding Peace and the True Soul," she thought others should, too.
"The great thing about this book is that it is written by a child for children," she is quoted as saying in a release from Tribute. "For a young writer, it is a very good adventure story. I feel she deserves the chance to get her work out there. She has such a great outlook on life."
Andrea lives in Scranton with her mom, Katryna Howells, and Mrs. Gasper. Her grandmother had the book published through Tribute Books using Andrea's illustration for the cover.
Andrea hopes, Ms. Howells says, "to be able to make a series of these books. She is currently working on the second one."
"If you ask Andrea where the ideas for the book came from," her mother said, "she will tell you that it all started with a dream.
"Once my mother read the book, she decided that she wanted to get it published for Andrea, and with her dedication and commitment to my daughter, she got it published."
Depending on the success of her first book, Andrea is looking to publish the second installment of her Finding Peace series, "The Fallen Angel," in the near future.

Harry Potter's Muggles' Guide to Magic Review

Harry Potter's Muggles' Guide to Magic
Average Reviews:

I have not been so disappointed with a book in a long time. The author comes across as obviously NOT a Harry Potter expert. On first reading, without consulting the actual books, I found more flat-out errors than I could count. The reading turned into a contest where I tried to spot mistakes. I don't want to list them because it might be fun for others to pick them out as well.
And that does not even include the editorial errors. The typeface is ugly and hard to read. Words are misspelled. The notes for "Chamber of Secrets" abruptly end partway down a page and are mixed with the last notes for "Prisoner of Azkaban." Then the misplaced notes are repeated again in the proper location. It is a very obvious mistake.
There are a lot of different guides to the Harry Potter books out there. Take your time and find one that is more accurate than this one. I am returning mine.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Movie Poster Book Review

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Movie Poster Book

What can I say? I'm a Potter fanatic, and I jumped to buy the Movie Poster book as soon as it came out. The posters are beautifully done and cover a wide range of scenes. There are headshots of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, a scene from Gringotts, and even Ron and Harry at Christmas.
If you have seen the first and second trailors for the film, then you won't being seeing many new things. That's why I only gave it 4 stars. Personally, I think that it is worth getting the Poster Book just to see the first picture released of Harry in his Quidditch uniform. I also enjoyed a shot of Dumbledore visiting Harry in the Hospital Wing.
The casting for the film was excellent, and the pictures in the book only support that fact. Each character matches the wonderful descriptions that JK Rowling provides in all four books.
As I said before, your not seeing much new, but the book is money well spent. This way you don't have to wait 2 hours to download the trailor or pay for a movie ticket just to see the trailor! It will be there in your library to view again and again.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Arabic Edition) (Harry Potter (Arabic))
Average Reviews:

I've just read a few pages, and have already noticed that the translator arbitrarily skips entire paragraphs, shortens most sentences, and tries to avoid translating anything that might require some effort or creativity. I've searched online and it turns out that the Arabic "translations" of the other books in the series are just as abysmal.
Whether you're a native Arabic speaker looking to read the stories in your language, or you're practicing Arabic by reading it in parallel with English, I would not recommend wasting any time or money on Ahmed Hassan Mohammed's translations.
I would imagine that if anyone of Scholastic or Rowling's agents had checked this text, they would not have allowed its publication as an authorized translation.

I bought this when the first movie came out so that my wife and I could find out what all the excitement was about. We wanted to read it before renting the video. The only used English-language edition we could get at that time was a paperback printed in Britain. We really enjoyed reading it, and we were anxious to see the movie and compare it to the book. Both book and movie were excellent, though much had to be left out of the movie in order to keep the movie to less than seven or eight hours. We were puzzled that objections to this marvelous book came from so many people.Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Arabic Edition) (Harry Potter (Arabic)) Review

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Arabic Edition) (Harry Potter (Arabic))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a review of the book itself -- I'm sure lots of people have already done that. The reason I bought this product was to improve my reading fluency in Arabic. I've been studying Arabic for about 3 years now, but its very hard to find interesting reading material. And grammatically Arabic is so different from English that its hard to get the knack of understanding the sentences, even if you know all the words.
That's where this book came in. At 708 pages, its certainly plenty of practice. There's tons of vocabulary (although some of it is fairly useless -- werewolves and goblins and 10 kinds of wood for making wands... but most is vocabulary you'll see elsewhere). The translation seems coherent and grammatical to me (not that I'm an expert).
I will say that I enjoyed this book (Harry Potter 5) MUCH more than Harry Potter 1, which was an awful translation and made no attempt to be faithful to the nuances or imagery of JK Rowling's language. This translation still falls short of the charm of the original, but its quite readable.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Poster Book Review

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Poster Book
Average Reviews:

I like this poster book, but you'll be disappointed if you're looking for pictures of the adult characters. As of August 25, 2007, the book description in the Editorial Reviews erroneously lists posters for Dumbledore, Sirius Black, Bellatrix Lestrange and Lord Voldermort. The fact is that the only adult character included in this book is Tonks (and Mad-Eye, but that's because he's standing next to Tonks).
There are not many pictures taken from the movie either. Also, I could tell that two posters were from the Goblet of Fire. Still, there are some nice portraits and group pictures. I especially like the shots of the Weasley siblings together.
This book makes an acceptable sort of movie keepsake. However, I often wonder why five movies later none of the Harry Potter films has companion books such as those published for "The Lord of the Rings." I think it's time somebody works on a serious the-making-of type of book that will satisfy movie lovers. The Harry Potter films deserve a more in-depth, behind-the-scenes look than kids' movie poster books can ever offer.

I am an English Language Arts teacher in an upstate New York suburban middle school and I think this book is great. My students loved the book. I have a classroom copy on hand that many have borrowed. Not only has Randall picked out relevant, age-appropriate vocab words and defined them, but also, he shows how they are used within the Potter books. The second Harry Potter poster book brings you huge, glossy photos from the "Chamber of Secrets" film. There are posters of your favorite Harry Potter characters (castmembers dressed up in costume) and great film scenes. You can cut them out of the poster book if you'd like and hang them up but they are just as fun to look at by flipping through the book. The photos are not the same ones that you keep on seeing on every single Harry Potter site--a lot of them are rare ones that can only be found in this poster book. If you're a huge Harry Potter fan and can't wait for the "Chamber of Secrets" film to open, then this poster book is a must.
I highly recommend the "Chamber of Secrets" poster book.

Hour of the Witch: Harry Potter, Wicca Witchcraft and the Bible Review

Hour of the Witch: Harry Potter, Wicca Witchcraft and the Bible
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Months ago, I got into an e-mail discussion with Steve Wohlberg, the author of this book "Hour of the Witch" about Harry Potter. He then e-mailed an advanced copy of this book to me saying he hoped I would find it more convincing than a little booklet he wrote on the subject.
This book is mostly second hand research from a biased source. (See my book review of "Harry Potter and the Bible" by Richard Abanes.) Steve Wohlberg takes misinformation from Richard Abanes's book and transfers it into "Hour of the Witch."
How do I know this? Because in so many areas in Wohlberg's endnotes he acknowledges that many of his research basis are "Quoted by Abanes."SECTION ONE
Here are some errors which Wohlberg transfered from Abanes's book:
#1. Wohlberg, like Abanes, cites 2 interviews which J.K. Rowling gave to prove that she transfered occultism in her series. In one interview mentioned, given on October 12, 1999 for WBUR, a Wiccan told Miss Rowling that she did her "homework quite well." Wohlberg then continues to say that the Wiccan loved the books because they portrayed his beleifs positively and made his daughter comfortable with his involvement in the occult. This is misleading. I have the transcript of the discussion. The Wiccan did indeed tell Rowling, "You do your homework quite well," however, any unbiased researcher will be able to tell you that the only "homework" in the series is nothing more than folklore. And to top it all off, the Wiccan never said that the series portrayed his beleifs and made his daughter comfortable with his involvement in the occult. All he said was that he had Rowling's books and his step-daughter had in interest in them as well. He said it brought the family together. That's all----- The next interview mentioned was given on October 20, 2000 for WAMU's Diane Rehm. Wohlberg says that in this interview that Rowling addmited that one-third of her Harry Potter series was based on actual occultism. I have the transcript of this conversation as well. This never happened. All Rowling said was that one-third of her series was based on folklore from Britain. She said "Folklore." Not "Occultism." The two are not one and the same.
In his e-mail to me, Wohlberg told me to especially read Chapter 7, "The Potion," to see how J.K. Rowling weeves fantasy and reality togather. After reading the chapter my mental responce was "Oh, yeah. And your point is...?" His chapter is basically how Rowling weeves British Mythology in her books. So What? Weeving fantasy with reality or mythology is not a new or necesarily a dangerous idea. Even Christian authors do it. What makes Rowling so special? Because she writes books that kids actually like? (And by the way, J.K. Rowling is a Christian of the Church of Scotland). But, I digress, none of the mythology in Rowling's books are Occultic. If his definition of occultism was reality then wee would have to rid ourselves of "Lord of the Rings," "Narnia," and others.
#2. He cites an article from "This is London" entitled "Potter fans turning to witchcraft." However, this article (and I read it) give little or no proof to back up its claim. It's bassically an "I feel this is happening" piece. There is a small area of that article which Harry-Potter-Haters avoid (which I forgott to mention in my review of Abanes's book.) This article points out that minors under 18 are not allowed to join the Wiccan craft. So, it actually defeats its own case. It doesn't prove anything against Harry Potter.
Wohlberg also appears ignorant that polling data says that despite a large following that Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, and other magical shows, the occult in the U.S. and Europe, according to a ZENIT survey on cesnur.org, remains under 0.1%. That survey also mentions that despite a huge following of Harry Potter in Europe, the occult there is in decline.
SECTION TWO
The following are not Abanes Errors
#3. Wohlberg makes connections between Harry Potter and Wicca which do not exist. In one place he tries to make a case that Harry Potter teaches Wicca because it mentions Witch Burnings.
He also says that both Wicca and Harry Potter Witches are seen as gifted souls. Unfortunately for Wohlberg's case, this is not even mentioned in Harry Potter. It doesn't exist in the series.
He also says that Harry Potter teaches Wicca because Wiccans beleive using Magick to do good and to protect. This is a bogus connection. This makes the "Wizard of Oz" and "Lord of the Rings" look evil because the same thing happens there.
#4. Wohlberg then says that Harry Potter paints most Muggles (non-magical folk) as stupid because Harry's non-magical relatives abuse him. News to Wohlberg, Rowling is talking about one family here. Saying this shows Harry Potter is anti-muggle is like saying a movie about Pearl Harbor is anti-Japanese.
A common misconception that Wohlberg and other "harry Haters pass on is that Harry Potter contains the Wiccan beleifs. I have researched Wicca and this is not true and Wiccans agree with me. Allow me to cite reliable sourses which back me up:
The Following is an exerpt from a news article written by Ben Roy entitled "Wiccans Dispute Potter Claims." It is available at Cesnur.org:
"While an Alexandria woman is trying to ban the readingaloud of Harry Potter books at Bristol Elementary School because she says they promote Wicca, practicing members of the religion disagree.
Local Wiccans have come out against the claim the books promote their religion. They said the book is fiction, and does not represent their beliefs in any way.
" 'It really doesn't have anything to do with us,' said Peter Mather, an initiated Wiccan priest who lives in Plymouth.
Mather said he has examined the books and found nothing having to do with his religion.
" 'I've bought these books myself for my kids,' Mather said.
He said he finds no problem with them. He said a person who would ban them because they think the books promote Wicca is 'another intolerant person.'
" 'I've read these books, since I wanted to see what was in them before I gave them to my kids, and I must say that these books no more promote witchcraft than `Anne of Green Gables' promotes moving to Nova Scotia,' Mather said.
END OF EXERPT.
Dana Corby, a Witch on "Witchvox.com says, "Then the media wanted to talk to 'real witches' about it. And in every interview we told them that Harry Potter was a charming fantasy and a great read, but that (1) it does not even vaguely resemble real magic, (2) it does not encourage (much less teach) witchcraft or sorcery, and (3) it has nothing to do with satanism. And by the way, (4) neither do we."
Terry Paajanen, a witch at "paganwiccan.about.com says on her Harry Potter web page, "Wiccans worship both a God and Goddess, though there is no mention of any form of Deities at all in the Harry Potter series. Wicca is a religion after all, not just the act of casting spells. Why, there is no spirituality in these books and movies at all!"
She continues to say, "As I searched the Internet looking for pro-Potter sites, I was absolutely overwhelmed by the number of articles and sites dedicated to "exposing the evil truths about Harry Potter". What surprised me even more was the blatent lies and false information they contain. The biblical references used to back up their claims are questionable at best, and all of them are focused on the evils of magick and Witchcraft. The connection between J.K Rowling's books and Witchcraft is all in their heads. The 'experts' don't really know anything about Witchcraft at all, and it's a shame that they are the ones yelling the loudest."
Not proof enough? How about Wiccan Kerr Cuhulain telling anti-Potterite Jack Roper who said that HP is full of Wiccan concepts that it was "only full of what he thinks are witchcraft concepts" but are far different from "the reality of Wicca"? (Comment available at witchvox.com)
These are the Witchcraft/Wiccan practitioners talking. Don't tell me non-practitioners know more than they do.
There is so much more evidence which vindicated Harry Potter. if you want to know more, e-mail me at krissmith567@hotmail.com

An Unofficial Muggle's Guide to the Wizarding World: Exploring the Harry Potter Universe (No Series Information required) Review

An Unofficial Muggle's Guide to the Wizarding World: Exploring the Harry Potter Universe (No Series Information required)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
J.K. Rowling has crafted a world that on the printed page, and with two books in her planned series still remaining, is nearly 2700 pages long. The first three films in the series clock in at nearly 455 minutes total. That is a heck of a lot of material to digest, let alone remember.
Fortunately, not even the wizard physicians at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries could have come up with a better remedy than that of first time author, Fionna Boyle. Like a spell cast to pack a wizard's suitcase, A Muggle's Guide to the Wizarding World manages to cram just about everything you need to know about the world and experiences of Harry Potter into an extremely enjoyable (approximate) 450 pages. Amazingly, she does so without spoiling anything for those readers who may not have finished reading all of Rowling's work, while at the same time offering just enough information to make this guide an exciting read in its own right, and a useful resource for those of us who have read and re-read the books more times than we can count.
She begins with brief biographical information on Rowling and the story behind the story of Harry Potter's beginnings - a tale almost magical in itself.
Part One of the book is a discussion of the various characters in Harry's world, from his close friends Ron and Hermione and their families, to more recent characters, such as Luna Lovegood and even the miscellaneous witches and wizards that have appeared in the books that you may have forgotten.
Part Two looks at Hogwarts, which Boyle covers so thoroughly, it seems as if she had filched the Marauder's Map herself. We learn about the four houses, classes students take, the castle, and of course, Quidditch.
Part Three opens our eyes to the wizarding world. Places that have been explored in the novels and films such as Hogsmeade and Knockturn Alley are included, as are the Ministry of Magic, wizarding gizmos and gadgets, and many more interesting parts of this mysterious realm.
Part Four is perhaps the most useful inclusion for the common muggle, as it features lists of differences between the books and films, offers advice on a wizarding tour of Britain, gives parents a few hints on staging their child's next Potter-themed party, and a great deal more.
Overall, this book is an outstanding way to pass the time until the next Potter book or movie is there for fans to devour. Reading A Muggle's Guide to the Wizarding World, I immediately wanted to pick up Rowling's earlier books again, as Boyle's text is so rich with details and enthusiasm for Harry Potter, that it's impossible to resist.
A Muggle's Guide to the Wizarding World is an invaluable resource for Harry Potter fans. Absolutely recommended!
