I've read a lot of books about Harry Potter, and a lot of them are not very good. But my only complaint with this one is that it's not long enough! Mr Nel the author knows a lot about Harry Potter, but he doesn't show off or get too clever about it. All of his ideas are interesting, like the prime numbers, and even though I knew some of what he says about JK Rowling already, I found out a few things too. Plus, the book is small and cute!
I think this would be a good introduction if you want to know more about Harry Potter. I hope the author writes more when there are more Harry Potter books to write about!

Harry Potter Literature Guide: Goblet of Fire Review

Harry Potter Literature Guide: Goblet of Fire
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have actually read, well used, this book and others in this series. Since I am not a school teacher, my perspective is as a parent of a bright 7 year old who absolutely adores the Harry Potter books.
This series of guides is meant to serve as a resource for classroom teachers. The Harry Potter books are the basis for activties in a wide range of subject areas. Even though these are deisgned as teacher resource guides, they are wonderful for family use as well.
I bought this book on a whim during a midday stop on a long car trip. It looked like a way to keep my daughter occupied for hours, and I was right. The book is full of insightful questions about Goblet of Fire, its themes and the larger issues outside the book.
We treated it almost as a trivia game, for example we whiled away the better part of 200 miles by discusssing all the different kinds of wizard snacks we could remember from the various books, what kinds of souveneirs we might sell at the Quidditch World Cup, and more substantial questions about their behavior and attitudes of the characters. My 7 year old surprised me with the depth of her understanding of the behaviour and motivation of Malfoy. My wife and I had almost as much fun as the 7 year old.
There is much meat here. So much so, that one of these guides often goes with us on long car trips. We have bought extra copies to give as presents. I highly recommend this series to parents who want to wring even more educational value out of the Harry Potter books.
Even though I am not a teacher, I can see how these would be useful in the classroom. The suggested activities seem appropriate for a wide range of ages and subject areas. All in all, I highly recommend them. Just keep in mind, these guides are not meant for reading -- to get real value from them you will want to use them as the basis for your own games and discussions with your kids.
These guides will work best if used during or relatively shortly after reading the book. Kids who remember detail well will get the most out of the activities. For kids who don't retain detail well, it would probably be better to use these guides while reading the Harry Potter books.
I highly recommend this series of guide books to parents. Teachers shoild find real value here too.

The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II: The World of Harry Potter (Harry Potter Movie T) Review

It's a really nice hardbound book printed on heavy paper for about the same price of a magazine-type fan book. We bought one for a Harry Potter party where everyone could cut out pictures and mount them on magnetic paper for their middle school lockers. 128 pages had enough images so everyone found some they wanted.
We bought a second one to keep whole.

After receiving my 2012 Harry Potter Year-In-A Box calendar, I was disappointed in two things. 1) The paper/print quality is poor...thin paper and images that seemed faded. 2) After thumbing through the whole calendar of 365 days, I noticed that quite a few photos are duplicated. Despite these flaws, the calendar will serve its purpose, which is to help me get my "HP fix" throughout the year.

My Year with Harry Potter (P) Review

Ben Buchanan has written a charming book examining the year he fell in love with the Harry Potter books and conquered his dyslexia. The author's voice is clear regarding his love for the magic he finds when transported to Harry Potter's world and Ben's desire to make the experience last as long as possible. The photographs and drawings are wonderful and help the reader understand the great care Ben took as he created a board game of Harry Potter trivia. Adults who love children and children who love Harry Potter should read this book.

I liked the calendar. It looks steady, isn't heavy, has enough space to write for each day. I loved the separators between the months and the little dragon on each alternate page. The artwork is descent, though I'd prefer it to cover more films, not just the last one. Too bad that it doesn't start with September, as academic planners do, since the majority of people who would buy a Harry Potter dairy are students, I presume.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: Ancient Greek Edition Review

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: Ancient Greek Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The writing of the second century AD author Lucian was the model for this translation of Harry Potter in to ancient Greek. A more appropriate author could not be found. Lucian is where we get the story "The Sorceror's Apprentice" (for his tale "The Lover of Lies"), so he provides vocabulary very relevant to JK Rowling's story.
While I don't see any universities adding this Greek translation into their classics curriculum or graduate reading lists, and nor do I see anyone really sitting down to read it cover-to-cover, it is a nice little novelty to have on one's bookshelf (next Harrius Potter, of course).

The Greek translation of the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, in which Harry Potter, a normal eleven-year-old boy, discovers that he is a wizard. Long ago, Harry's parents were killed in a battle with the evil Lord Voldemort. When we first meet Harry, he is living miserably with his repulsive and nonmagical (or Muggle) Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon Dursley, and their even more revolting son, Dudley. Following a bizarre but hilarious chain of events, Harry finds himself at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with an outrageous cast of characters, including super smart Hermione Granger, vile Draco Malfoy, sinister Professor Snape, and wise Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Adventures galore ensue.

Harry Potter, Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings: What You Need to Know About Fantasy Books and Movies Review

Harry Potter, Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings: What You Need to Know About Fantasy Books and Movies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Harry Potter, Narnia, and the Lord of the Rings by Richard Abanes is a dissection of three of the greatest fantasy phenomena around today. Is fantasy harmful? Can we learn from it? Are there different types? How does fantasy affect us?
These are just a few of the questions Abanes answers in his informative book. As a mildly interested reader and watcher of fantasy, this book surprised me as it disclosed the impact that reading or observing fantasy can have on a person--especially a child or teenager. Yet parents are often very lax in supervising what their children read or watch, resulting in a decline in morals as well as an increasing interest in the occult.
Abanes compares the three above-named fantasies to show what each is preaching or teaching. With the Narnia and Lord of the Rings series, he shows how Christian values and morals can be taught through the fantasy medium.
With Harry Potter, he raises a few questions. Some in the Christian arena have said it teaches Christian morals. Abanes disputes this by asking: Do we have a clear-cut example of good and bad in Harry Potter? How can we call the hero "good" and yet watch Harry lie, cheat, and steal? What about all the occult spells and paraphernalia explored in the books?
In the last chapters, he shows how television and movies are delving more and more into the occult, including horror movies and even prime-time weekly television programs. "Children are big imitators," asserts Abanes. Many of the crimes being perpetrated today--especially by children and teenagers--are copycats of scenes watched in movies or television.
Harry Potter, Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings is enlightening while remaining highly readable. Abanes challenges Christian authors and pastors in a friendly way, but calls us all to be discerning of what we put before our children and grandchildren. ..

The Irresistible Rise of Harry Potter Review

The Irresistible Rise of Harry Potter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, I only rated this one star because I can't rate it none. Secondly, I'm glad I bought this second hand because its about 1/4 inch thick.
Thirdly, this is not a good book. Like the previous reviewer stated, Blake seems to be trying to answer why Harry Potter is so popular, but he never really does. He provides a whole bunch of statistics like The Labour Party came into power in the same year Harry was published. So what? This isn't enough. (Not to mention that Fudge has often been called a parody of Tony Blair). He cites a lot of coincidences and contemporaneous events, but doesn't do much with them. Many of his arguments are very thin. He uses the example of Harry relaxing by playing Qudditch in a scene from Book Four to argue that in the books "Retail therapy and sport substitute for emotional contact." Clearly this guy has no clue what he's talking about. One wonders if it is not Blake who has the problem with emotional contact--obviously, he could not emotionally connect with the books.
Which brings up the main reason why this book is so bad--Blake never took the time to read the books thoroughly and analyze them thoroughly. I got the impression he had casually read through them maybe one time. He never analyzes them beyond a casual recital of the plot. The books are used as mere examples of his thin social and political theories, with a cold, Professor Binns-like indifference.
His attitude is insensitive, condescending, cynical, and patronizing, to the point that one wonders why in the world he wrote this book at all? I can only think it was to try and cash in on the phenomenon. Why, for example, is the lettering on the spine exactly like the "magical" lettering of the American versions?
I would advise you NOT to waste your money. Its only 116 SMALL pages with LARGE print.
I would recommend The Ivory Tower and Harry Potter instead. That is full of interesting ideas and its well worth the price.

Harry Potter Hogwarts School: A Magical 3-D Carousel Pop-Up Review

Harry Potter Hogwarts School: A Magical 3-D Carousel Pop-Up
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although styled as a book, there are no pages, no words. The "carousel" is a dollhouse in book format. Rooms include the Gryffindor common room with puffy chairs; Harry & Ron's "dormitory" room; a classroom (looks like Snape's potion room in a dungeon"; the Sorcerer Stone's hideaway--with devil's snare, winged keys and a glimpse of the giant chessboard; the library with restricted section; and of course the main hall of Hogwarts.
My daughter and her cousin have already acted out numerous scenes (mostly of their own creation) using this as their stage. It is wonderful because it's detailed, inventive, and just like any stage set--leaves lots of room for imagination, acting and role-playing.
I recommend this for anyone with children interested in the Harry Potter stories, especially those with a flair for the dramatic. It's also nice just as a look-at decoration for the collector or fan.

Harry Potter and the Paganization of Culture Review

Harry Potter and the Paganization of Culture
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an incredibly informative book that details books like the Harry Potter books (though other books and movies are analyzed)and details why it is not true authentic Christian Literature in the sense that moral relativism is rampant, dark symbols are portrayed as good, death is an ongoing theme and that there aren't really any virtues except what the most powerful persons in the books claim them to be.
It goes into more detail than O'Brien's previous book; and his explanations are clear and charitable. If one seeks to read a dark book, so be it. But know that it is a dark book, not a book pretending to be a virtuous one. This, especially is dangerous for children who need guidance.

The Harry Potter Series, book by book. Parental Strategies for Healthy Family Culture. Pope Benedict and Harry Potter. The War of Disinformation and Opinion. Harry Potter and the Gnostic Mind. Where Is It All Going? Twilight of the West. The Golden Compass or the Moral Compass? Master story-teller and artist Michael O'Brien-the man to whom CNN went for comment on Harry Potter-has penned the definitive work assessing the Potter phenomenon. This book is essential reading for all parents whose children have read or are considering reading the wildly popular offerings by J.K.Rowling and similar works such as Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. Although this is an analytical work, the reader will be captivated from the beginning, from the must-read preface onward. O'Brien's earlier work, A Landscape with Dragons, delineated authentic Christian fantasy literature from its counterfeits. Now in Harry Potter and the Paganization of Culture, he fascinatingly contrasts Potter-world with C.S. Lewis's Narnia and with Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings, and specifically Harry with Frodo. For those whose children have consumed Potter, O'Brien's analysis will enable parents to comprehend the messages which have been fed their children and give them the points and arguments which will hopefully be the antidote to properly reset their moral order. The book goes beyond Potter, however, to address other bestselling series such as Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and Phillip Pullman's The Golden Compass. In addition to these and other fantasy books, O'Brien reviews the films which they spawned. In all, the author's new book teaches Christians how to discern harmless fantasy literature and film from that which is destructive to heart, mind and soul. I cannot recommend this work highly enough. Field Guide to Harry Potter Review

Field Guide to Harry Potter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Other than the first few chapters, I found that this book is a wonderful reference to the Harry Potter book series. I did know about J.K. Rowling's life story and how she wrote her books. This went a little more in depth about that and her background.
I found the religious portions interesting as well as informative. It brought to my mind that things are not all what they seem to be. One does not know everything about the religious aspects that are brought to light in the Harry Potter books. When one reads them, the individual probably does not realize the effects of religion in those books. They are reading the books because it is Harry Potter and are not looking deeper into the stories.
"The Field Guide to Harry Potter" is just that. A 'guide' so that those who read it will get a better understanding of the underlying themes of the individual books. This makes one want to read the books over and over again, as I have done.
