Harry Potter ~ Audio Cassettes Books 1-5 ~
Average Reviews:

These are pretty much fantastic. The books are light enough to lend themselves to long, quiet, car trips -- and are even enhanced by to the fantastic reading skills of Jim Dale. Each book you work through you will think, "Man, I hope this guy reads the rest of these books." Luckily he does. His ability to project distinctly different voices, while still reading the material as written, and not simply becoming a dramatic interpretation is phenomenal. This set delivers the goods, and are listenable for adults as much as for kids. (If you love this narrator, and I'm sure you will, check out his absolutely pitch perfect reading of the classic Peter Pan. I had no idea of the power and brilliance of the original book. Sadly, I simply thought of it as a simple little kids book, but in reality is it a poignantly beautiful masterpiece that, like these Harry Potter tapes, will be listened to by your kids over and over. You will not regret the purchase.

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1) Review

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I held off buying THE LIGHTNING THIEF for a couple years. The market seems glutted with YA fantasy at the moment, and I read quite a bit of it with my 9-year-old. We've discovered several good series, but THE LIGHTNING THIEF seemed too long to hold his attention when it first came out.
This year we noticed it in the book fair at school, then saw that it was an Accelerated Reader book. So I picked it up and read a couple chapters to try it out. I was 50 pages into it when I realized I needed to be reading this to my son.
I did read it to him. We FLEW through the book (375 pages!) in 6 days because he kept pestering me to read it to him. We finished it up in a 5-hour marathon yesterday, hanging onto every page as Percy and his friends tried to save the world and put things to rights in their own lives.
THE LIGHTNING THIEF is a great book for adults and kids. I've already recommended it to a couple of adult friends who experienced the same kind of can't-put-it-down pull that I did.
Percy Jackson, the hero of the book, comes across as every kid you'd ever meet or ever would. He's no brainiac (he has dyslexia and ADHD) but he has friends who are. But he is courageous and clever, stubborn and loyal. He is the best he can be, and he's getting even better.
Riordan works in many of the Greek myths in the novel. There was a time when knowing Greek mythology was a pre-requisite for having a "classical" education. Many morals and philosophies are presented in the tales.
From the very beginning of the novel, we find out Percy is different when he ends up fighting a harpy in the museum while on a school trip. He's been kicked out of 6 schools in 6 years, lives with his mom and step-dad, Smelly Gabe, an evil guy who deliberately makes Percy's life hard.
Then, when he's on a well-deserved vacation with his mom, he finds out he's a Half-Blood, the son of one of the Greek gods. But his mom doesn't know who his dad was and that's just one of the mysteries Percy ends up solving.
The cool part of the book is peeling away all the mysteries of Percy's life and who really took Zeus's magic thunderbolt. Along the way he gains powers that set my son's head to spinning with hope and delight. Percy's a superhero without the costume, and there are plenty of villains in his world.
Riordan is a teacher who obviously loves kids as well as the subject matter. The Greek gods were a cantankerous lot, and Riordan delivers them well. Not only does he give his readers the stories, but he also brings the gods on stage and gives them personalities.
The series is supposed to run for 5 books. I think it will go on longer. I hope so. I've already ordered books 2 and 3, and my son and I are looking forward to them. The books take a while to read outloud to younger readers, but the effort is well rewarded. The story is rich and deep, and will keep your child's attention. In addition, you'd be surprised how much you can talk about even when you're not reading. And your child may just want to wander around the internet learning more interesting facts about Greek mythology.
THE LIGHTNING THIEF is well worth reading and is probably in most public and school libraries.

Serenity Review

The first book I read by Dr. Harry Kraus was "Could I Have This Dance?". It was just outstanding, so I had high expectations for this book as well. And I was not disappointed! As a fan of Robin Cook's books from way back, I was thrilled to find this genre under the umbrella of Christian fiction.
This book is difficult to put down - the plot twists and turns and Dr. Kraus' characterization is excellent - you really feel like you know the characters. I especially liked his depiction of Travis, the son of the main female character, Beth. I felt that the book was realistic and wasn't one of these in which everything is perfectly resolved by the end of the book.
There are several of Harry Kraus' earlier books that I am looking forward to reading! If you like Harry Kraus' books, check out Hannah Alexander, a husband/wife writing team (the husband is also a doctor). Those books are wonderful as well!
Please check out my reviews of other Christian books!

Pokemon & Harry Potter: A Fatal Attraction Review

Pokemon and Harry Potter: A Fatal Attraction

This sort of thinking makes Christianity look plain silly. It presents an image of Christians as close-minded simpletons, easily lead by fear. And make no mistake, Arms is out to spread fear - it's remarkably easy to control people who are afraid.
As a Christian I am insulted that the very serious subject of good vs. evil is trivialized by comparison to a harmless series of books. The only crime J.K. Rowling is guilty of is getting kids' noses away from the T.V. and into books. As for Pokemon, referring to a cartoon as the work of Satan is simply moronic.

Harry Potter Coloring/Activity Book : Friendship (With Glitter Glue) Review

Harry Potter Coloring/Activity Book : Friendship (With Glitter Glue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The art in this coloring book is boring. What makes coloring fun is the detail--even for the youngest "artists", simple lines in complete pictures make for better coloring. These pages are not filled--usually there is a central image of Harry, Ron or Hermione or two or three of them--no details of place or action and lots of empty white space around them. Even the glitter glue doesn't make up for this boring collection of coloring pages. Still it is Harry Potter and a true fan will still find some pleasure in it. Also Neville makes a rare appearance.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter Film Tie in) Review

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter Film Tie in)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A friend who lives in London just sent me this book, and it's fabulous! The picture on the front cover is actually a hologram that shows Harry surrounded by Voldemort and a Death Eater at one angle, and the other view is Harry with Hermione & Ron at his sides.
The inside of the book is filled with gorgeous color pictures, mostly from Order of the Phoenix since that's the book in which Dumbledore's Army was born, but there is also a section that goes back all the way to the first book and gives sort of a pictoral "history" of Harry's battle against Voldemort, plus sections on Order members and Death Eaters. There is just enough writing to "remind" you of what's happening in a scene, but not enough to obscure the illustrations.
For the autograph collector, this book would be a wonderful tool for collecting them as it has photos of all the major cast members with enough extra space for signatures so that a person wouldn't be writing across his or her own face. I just wish I lived in the UK so I'd have an opportunity to use it that way!
If you're a true fan of the Potter film series, this is a collector piece not to be missed.

The Mysteries of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Invisible Image Coloring Book) Review

The Mysteries of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Invisible Image Coloring Book)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, it's pretty much a given that I will buy just about any harry potter item, but this one was the first real disappointment. First of all, I thought this was like the old magic coloring books that give you one pen and then depending on where you color in the picture, it came up a different color. Especially great for little ones, because you could never color out of the lines! But this, sadly, was not like that at all. It's a blank page that you just color from top to bottom to make the image appear, all in one color (I think the pen can be either green or blue depending on which side you use.) Two bad things about this - first, it's terribly boring and second, the pen is guaranteed to run out of ink before you are done with the book.

We Love Harry Potter Review

We Love Harry Potter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book out of optimism, because I thought that anything praising Harry Potter would be relatively harmless. When I ordered the fourth instalment from a shop, I was nearly made to buy it again. Thankfully, I didn't - once was enough.
What is the point of this book? Reading this repeatedly is enough to put you off Harry Potter. The book itself is divided into sections, as follows:
1. The children's opinions on the series. Most of the children made mistakes that showed how little they had understood of the Harry Potter books, such as talking about "Madam Pooch", and asking, "I don't see why Mrs Norris had to die..." when she didn't. The information that was correct was usually unhelpful and unnecessary. Even people who haven't read the books have probably gathered by now that Harry is, well, the goodie. They even went so far as to tell us personal information about their pets: "I have a pet frog whom I keep in a cage and feed crickets." Ms Moore didn't help, either; she regularly wrote unnecessary columns between the letters to talk about such irrelevant matters as Thanksgiving dinner and Valentine's Day.
There were "letters" to Hogwarts, there was a trivial trivia quiz and there was even an anagram puzzle in which about half the words were related to wizardry. There were comments about how Quidditch could be played on the ground, or with scrap metal claws (enough said), and even some pointless recipes - or, in some cases, non-recipes. A quote: "Last year I mad a restaurant called Slimy Louie's which served Road Kill Stew and Rat-tat-tooy. I didn't include Stuffed Owl because you wouldn't want to eat Hedwig or Errol." I won't make any more comments. I don't think they're needed. This material is normally channelled into amateur websites, not books.
On the back you will read: "Do you want to find out what others have said about how they'd like to fly on a hippogriff or raise a pet dragon?" Think about this. Do you? As other reviewers have commented, there's nothing new to be gained from this book. However, I have thought of one use for this book. It would be superb, all 100 or so pages of it, as kindling for a bonfire. And that's what I'm going to use my copy as.

The Book of Wizardry: The Apprentice's Guide to the Secrets of the Wizards' Guild Review

The Book of Wizardry: The Apprentice's Guide to the Secrets of the Wizards' Guild
Average Reviews:

This is a cute book that has obviously been designed for a young novice in the magical arts, sort of a Harry Potteresque instruction book. It's hard to tell whether this is a serious book on the subject at first, but it does have real magic and techniques for increasing concentration and such, and half of the book is taken up by a "Choose Your Own Adventure" type of novella.
The only annoying thing about it this book is that it mixes fantasy and real magical techniques, but I suppose that might be fun for a younger reader. It's a bit like telling children about Santa Claus, though.
In short, this is a good book for a young adult who is interested in magic and fantasy (and most likely a Harry Potter fan) but doesn't know where to begin, and/or if you want to teach a young adult magical technique but want to do it in a fun way.
