I have a stag horn handled riding whip and I'm pleased with how realistic this molded matte plastic looks by comparison. My grandson (nine years) doesn't care so much about its realism, but greatly loves his wand. He'd been saving up for it and was delighted when we found it unexpectedly in a local bookstore where my coupons and membership card helped make a dent in the price.
It is well worth the cost based on how much it's been enjoyed so far. So often we buy things that are barely touched, but this marvelous looking wand has barely left my grandson's hand since he got it.
There is a cap in the base that must be unscrewed with the included key to reveal the battery compartment (2 AAA's, not included). A small screwdriver would also manage this task if the plastic key is misplaced. The light illuminates when the wand is waved with a bit of a jerk, and turns off the same way. There is a button on the handle that controls the brightness of the light and (I think) can also turn the wand off, but he doesn't use it as he likes the tiny light at top brightness all the time when it illuminates.
The box is good-looking and a bit like those pictured in the movie so it has been treasured and used to put the wand away when not in use (which is almost never, it seems :)
I highly recommend this wand for Harry Potter fans. It sure has been a hit with my grandchildren (my granddaughter got the Hermione wand at the same time).
