This calendar is great for anyone who lover Harry Potter. It offers some great pictures from the upcoming movie, The Half-Blood Prince. Although I love the calender the only thing I needed to get used to is that each week starts with Monday and ends on Sunday. It offers the previous and following month for reference under each current month, and most major holidays are notated (so far, it is only April). Overall this calendar is great for anyone, especially a Harry Potter fan.

Rite Of The Revolution: Adam Weishaupt, the Bavarian Illuminati & the Strange Origins of the New World Order Review

Rite Of The Revolution: Adam Weishaupt, the Bavarian Illuminati and the Strange Origins of the New World Order
Average Reviews:

This book is vivid, lively and entertaining. While not for every reader by any means, the reader who enjoys irreverent, unabashed scandal and conspiracy will devour The Rite of the Revolution.
Freemasons, Egyptian sex cults, Jewish mythology, hemp and the founding fathers, Rodgers delivers them all and more.
My only complaint was that the book took on too much. The Rite of the Revolution tackles content enough for two books easily. And my rating for the book would have to be NC-17. But if you feel you are up for it, this book packs a punch. Characters, settings and background are all well researched, so the deeper you like to go down the rabbit hole the more The Rite of the Revolution will scratch your itch.
Definitely a cult classic in the making and an "undiscovered" talent in Rodgers.

Beyond Disney: The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando ,SeaWorld and the Best of Central Florida (Unofficial Guides) Review

Beyond Disney: The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando ,SeaWorld and the Best of Central Florida (Unofficial Guides)

Beyond Disney is meant to be used as a second guide when planning a trip to Orlando. They assume that you have purchased The Unofficial Guide Walt Disney World 2010 (Unofficial Guides) or something similar and are using this one for the other theme parks in the area. This is a good idea but there are some problems with it. First, the Universal Parks are already covered in the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World and that material is largely dropped in here with no significant changes. So if you have the Unofficial WDW book, then you don't need to see that again here.
The main value in this book lies in the coverage of Sea World and Busch Gardens. Both are major theme parks and get full coverage here. I found the Busch Gardens information especially helpful. Busch has so many attractions that you can't possibly enjoy every one in a single day and this guide will help you focus on what you might enjoy the most. This is the only book in the Unofficial Guide series where you'll find material on Busch and Sea World, and many of the other publishers ignore those parks completely. If you are interested in attending either park, then I highly recommend Beyond Disney. If you plan to stick to WDW and/or the Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure area then you can safely skip this.

Chronicles of Narnia Movie Tie-in Box Set The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (rack) Review

Chronicles of Narnia Movie Tie-in Box Set The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (rack)

Let me start by saying that I loved these stories as a child. I read "The Lion, the With and the Wardrobe" in fourth grade as a part of class. I was reluctant to read it and had no interest (school kids are like that) but I was sucked into the story very quickly. I had my parents buy me the boxed set and I believe I ended up reading 5 of the 7 books. I absolutely love this story.
After at least 40 minutes of Googling, I finally found out what the difference between the "adult" version and the regular version is. Apparently the "adult" version includes some essay material about the literature and each book contains a synopsis of information you'd need to know from the other books to read the one you're holding. Other than that, only the packaging is different. The stories all remain the same. I only wish Amazon.com would have provided me this information and saved me the time.

Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard Review

Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard, in my opinion, is a landmark book. Zell-Ravenheart has taken the popular fiction and fantasy of today to produce a primer for a good life that will appeal to today's video game youth.
In my youth I was introduced to the principals and ideals taught in this book by Glenda the Good, TikTok, the Tin Woodman and all of L. Frank Baum's characters in the Oz books. Today, it's not so easy to get young people to listen. Using popular images from movies such as Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings the Grimoire presents an astounding amount of educational information in an entertaining way.
It's a combination history book, motivational book, self help book and magickal primer all wrapped up in one.
As mentioned in earlier reviews, I did run into some printing errors. Some of the rune graphics were out of place. They were included as a separate insert sheet that I taped in the back cover. I can only assume that they will be fixed in later printings.
The book is not about Wicca or other pagan paths. One of the other reviews listed this as a problem. I don't believe it is intended to be a lesson in religion. By keeping the religious aspect out of the book, and presenting it in a "Harry Potterish" way it will ease the way for some parents to allow their children to read the book. Remember, some parents believe that any religion except christianity is an evil cult. Many of the "lessons" or "assignments, " some presented as games, will help a young person throughout their life. There are exercises to improve pattern recognition and memory just to mention a few.
This is not a fictional Merlin story. The type of wizard described in this book is achievable. The concepts taught are the same concepts that successful people all over the world have used to become the captains of industry, company presidents and good parents. That's why I purchased copies for both of my grandchildren. (That way they will keep their hands off my copy!)
I cant put it better than Griffin from Lafayette, CA United States did:
I highly recommend this book to both new and old readers alike. It is refreshing to see an author who not only claims the intention to provide an open philosophy that still honors its history and practice, but who succeeds in doing so.

This is the BEST guide there is to Harry Potter and J. K. Rowling! It is A-Z and covers EVERYTHING! It is a little expensive but well worth it. You can look up anything just like in any encyclopedia, and it will be here. It will give you an explanation and page numbers where you can find it in the books. It also includes everything from HALF-BLOOD PRINCE (the 6th book that came out in 2005) plus FANTASTIC BEASTS and QUIDDITCH THROUGH THE AGES! I like just looking through it for fun while I wait for Book 7. I bet you will too!

The Trouble with Harry Review

The Trouble with Harry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'd like to point out the religious discrimination put forth by Mr. Arnold and his critique of paganization.
First of all, the term pagan first came into usage to religious devotees who did not follow Christianity. Many pagan religions, communities, and healers were stomped out in the "witch burnings" which happened to kill more people than the Holocaust. Some people now are trying to find out more about these religions and the values that they hold. Today, paganism refers to a number of varied and scattered religious beliefs vaguely connected to the Western European (and some other areas) indigenous spirituality.
Secondly, Harry Potter does not depict paganism!!! It depicts characters using a fantasy-genre based magic that is presented as a fact of life and not a spirituality. That is simply the placement of the book. If another book was simply set in London, without talking about Christianity, specifically showing Christians, or visiting a church, it would be ludicrous to think that it was promoting Christianity. But this is exactly the type of critique Mr. Arnold makes.
Finally, I would ask you how you would respond to a criticism we ought to be aware of Schindler's List because it promotes Judaism, the Horacio Alger story because it promotes Protestantism, Aladdin because it promotes Islam, or the Lion King because it promotes Paganism (a more realistic claim). Those arguments would be received as discriminatory, hateful, and a bit silly. I hope you respond to The Trouble With Harry in a similar way.

With over 100 million books in print, major motion pictures that have broken all box-office records in its first few weeks of release, and countless spin-off books, games, toys and other merchandise, Harry Potter is truly a cultural phenomenon. But what kind of culture does Harry Potter represent? Although the books may seem harmless and charming, Catholic parents, teachers and clergy are asking, "Is Harry Potter's dark world of sorcery and witchcraft really good for Christian kids?"Convert from the OccultIn the comprehensive new three-tape set The Trouble with Harry, lay-Catholic apologist and EWTN Radio personality, Matthew Arnold, takes a critical look at the amazingly popular Potter books, the blockbuster movie and the cultural controversy that surrounds them. From the unique perspective of a convert from occult beliefs and practices, he begins with an overview of the debate over the suitability of the Potter series, presenting the arguments both for and against this kind of material from concerned Catholics and mainline Christians. As you listen, you'll discover that the concerns about J.K. Rowling's trendy tales of kids and the supernatural world are not the "knee-jerk" response of dim-witted Fundamentalism, but the reasoned reflections of some of the most respected thinkers in contemporary Christianity.Disturbing TrendIn these engaging and informative presentations you'll find the answers to questions like, "Isn't Harry Potter just a fantasy? Haven't fairy tales always had witches and magic? What about Christian fantasy like C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, or J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings?"Comparing these classics with the work of J.K Rowling, Matthew Arnold raises this question in reply, "When did the witches and wielders of black magic become the 'good guys?'" Exposing the disturbing trend of "paganization" in children's literature, Matthew demonstrates why Catholic philosophers from St. Augustine to Pope John Paul II have consistently warned against allowing things into the minds of your children that may undermine their faith. You'll discover the real and present danger of allowing un-Christian views of the supernatural to become cherished childhood memories-memories that could one day be a stumbling block to accepting an authentically Christian worldview.Desensitizing ExposureWith ample references to Sacred Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the words of the saints, Matthew Arnold also draws upon his own experience in the world of the occult, as well as the expert opinions of contemporary Catholic writers like Michael O'Brien (author of "Father Elijah") and classic reflections from Catholic literary giants J.R.R. Tolkien and G.K. Chesterton.Speaking as a Catholic father, who as a youth entered into the dark world of the occult precisely because of fantasy fiction, Matthew says, "While Rowling's books may be fantasy, we must realize that the occult is real. And just like violence and pornography, kids are desensitized by exposure." Order The Trouble with Harry, today and get the information you need to protect the minds and hearts of the Church's most precious asset-our children

The Help (Movie Tie-In) Review

The Help (Movie Tie-In)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A new classic has been born. Kathryn Sockett's "The Help" will live in hearts and minds, be taught in schools, be cherished by readers. The three women who form its core, idealistic Skeeter, loving Aibileen, and sarcastic, sassy Minny, narrate their chapters each in a voice that is distinctive as Minny's caramel cake no one else in Jackson, Mississippi, can duplicate.
These stories of the black maids working for white women in the state of Mississippi of the 60s have an insiders' view of child-rearing, Junior League benefits, town gossip, and race relations.
Hilly is the town's white Queen Bee with an antebellum attitude towards race. She hopes to lead her minions into the latter part of the century with the "enlightened" view of making sure every home in Jackson, Mississippi, has a separate toilet for the help. Her crusade is, she says, based on clear hygienic criteria, which will save both blacks and whites from heinous diseases.
Despite the fact that the maids prepare the food, care for the children, and clean every part of every home, privy to every secret, many of the white women look at their black maids as an alien race. There are more enlightened views, especially those of Skeeter, a white, single woman with a college degree, who aspires to more than earning her MRS. Skeeter begins collecting the maids' stories. And the maids themselves find the issue of race humiliating, infuriating, life-controlling. Race sows bitter seeds in the dignity of women who feel they have no choices except to follow their mamas into the white women's kitchens and laundries. Aibilene says, "I just want things to be better for the kids." Their hopes lie in education and improvement, change someday for their children.
There is real danger for the maids sharing their stories as well as danger for Skeeter herself. The death of Medgar Evers touches the women deeply, making them question their work and a decision to forge ahead, hoping their book can be published anonymously and yet not recognized by the very white women they know to the last deviled egg and crack in a dining room table.
The relationships between the maids and the white children, the maids and some kind employers, including "white trash" Cecilia Foot, illuminate the strange history of the South. The love Aibileen shows for Mae Mobley matches the love Skeeter felt as a white child from her maid-nanny Constantine.
There is never a dull moment in this long book. It is compulsively readable while teaching strong truths about the way the United States evolved from a shameful undercurrent of persistent racism to the hopes and dreams of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. Ultimately, will the next generations children learn (and be taught) that skin color is nothing more than a wrapping for the person who lives within?

The Wandmaker's Guidebook Review

The Wandmaker's Guidebook
Average Reviews:

This is a fun gift for a young Harry Potter or Wizardology fan. My 7 year old is enjoying the book immensely. Some parents might be worried about a "pagan" plaything like a wand, but most kids will simply have fun with the kit and learn a little something along the way. Although the "information" in the book is fictional, this is quite an erudite book, and parents who want their children to know something of world history may find this book a great starting point. I particularly enjoyed the reference to the "High Council of Aratta", and gave my son a lecture on Aratta in Sumerian literature, which he listened to with more patience that usual....
Most kids, brought up on a steady diet of cheap paperbacks, are also quite enchanted with beautiful books like this one, and the -ology books.

I read the first 2 books in the Harry Potter series and then listened to Matthew Arnold's audio tapes (twice!) I found Arnold's series insightful and well researched. I realized in listening to this audio set that I need to be more critical of what I read, listen to, and watch on television. Matthew Arnold addresses the Harry Potter series, but also the sad fact that many of us have lost the ability to critically analyze what we read. I enjoyed this audio set and have recommended it to many friends who have questions regarding Harry Potter books. It is good not only for Catholics, but all parents who are concerned about good reading materials for their children! A++

Sawdust and Spangles: The Amazing Life of W.C. Coup Review

Sawdust and Spangles: The Amazing Life of W.C. Coup
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This picture book biography is based on William Cameron Coup's memoirs; it tells how he began to work for a circus in the early-1850's while he was still in his teens, eventually partnered with P.T. Barnum to create the "P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Circus and Hippodrome", and "developed the system of loading circus equipment on railroad cars" so the circus could travel more easily between towns. The authors of this book explain that they end with his opening of the New York Aquarium because he was so proud of this accomplishment even though in actuality, he soon lost ownership of the aquarium. The text is child-friendly beginning with the words, "Many Years Ago In A Tiny Indiana Town, there lived a small boy with big dreams" and ending with, "for W.C. Coup, there was always a bigger dream to be found." The illustrations perfectly capture the magic of a circus with pictures of clowns, a lion tamer who is wearing a tuxedo and sporting a grand mustache, horseback riders performing acrobatics, and some fantastic creatures that might be found in a side show like a "DOG-FACED BOY" and a "BEARDED LADY". Faces of historical people like P.T. Barnum and Abraham Lincoln are recognizable.

A Charmed Life: The Spirituality of Potterworld Review

A Charmed Life: The Spirituality of Potterworld
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Up till 'Charmed', books about HP have been (1) diatribes against the books due to the dark magic therein, (2) defenses against type 1, and (3) analyses of HP as literature. In types 1 and 2, the various authors usually tell the reader what his or her conclusion should be.
This book takes a different approach, one of positive analysis with thoughtful conclusions -- but not forcing those conclusions down the reader's throat. It is extremely well written -- and is as readable and enjoyable as the HP books themselves.
'A Charmed Life' is divided into 5 long chapters, plus a shorter 6th with conclusions, and the long chapters are helpfully broken by mid-chapter headings. These chapters give an indepth look at some of Rowling's favorite issues, such as:
(1) actions have consequences,
(2) beware of the deceitfulness of appearances [a major lesson in LOTR],
(3) the target audience [first, JKR herself; second, those that like an exciting mystery], and I might add parenthetically, when Jo Rowling is interviewed, she constantly insists that her books are written for older teens and adults.
(4) the world view -- what you see is not all there is, [helpful to the Christian]
(5) the complicatedness of the moral world -- when things aren't exactly black and white,
and (6) periodic comparisons with 'The Chronicles of Narnia', LOTR, and Lewis Carroll's works.
Bridger looks at the issues of faith, fact, and truth, as portrayed by Jo Rowling, and finds much that is compatable to the way Christians are to think and believe.
'Charmed' is a helpful book to those who want to think carefully about these things.
To those who like their conclusions given to them, it is not so helpful.

Do you know how it feels like to find a nugget of gold in a stream of trash? It feels like reading Fairfaxe.
As ridiculous as the book description sounds and as devoid of information as the book cover displays, this novel is a nugget of literary gold. Do not let either the description or the cover stop you from tasting the words within these pages. It is well worth the price of admission. Don't believe me? Then at least trust Amazon's 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Why the 5-stars?
1. Brilliant storytelling. Where else would you find an intellectual dog-like creature journeying through a world fraught with stupidity? Yup, only here.
2. Memorable characters. The antagonists still haunt my dreams--2 months after having read this novel.
3. Beautiful setting. Ever walked around the coast of Central California? If not, google Big Sur and Monterey. Now imagine travelling in a fantasy world that magnifies their beauty.
4. Absurd plots. Like the reviewer before me, I laughed on several occasions--apparently graves and rocks contain comedic magic.
