(More customer reviews)I was nearly able to finish this entire book in one sitting. The material is certainly engrossing, although not entirely consisting of Wohlberg's own writing. There are several parts that are just extended reprints of stories and material from famous psychics and mediums, not to mention sections of the Holy Bible, but those are nonetheless just as interesting, (if not moreso) than S.W.'s writing. Although I did not ultimately find his especially detailed arguments compelling in the slightest, I did find his warnings to be unnerving and distressing.
I purchased this book as someone interested in reading about the history and practice of spirit communication, and am happy to have this book as it does represent one perspective on it. However, I have some other analysis/opinions on the book that I would like to share with other potential buyers.
S.W. will build up to a very creepy point of high tension, that would give any reader the unholy willies and then throw in "I don't tell you this to scare you." He does this repeatedly, and what it really says to me is "Yes, he is." I believe the author does use fear- as a tactic- in order to shepherd those who would dabble in mediumship or spirit communication away from such an act. Why? Because he sincerely believes it is wrong, and a sin against God. Okay. But he starts to go a little far when he begins to insinuate that mediums should be stoned to death, as is suggested in the Bible. P. 94: "It is not my job to judge motives or decide destinies. I'm not qualified to issue such verdicts." He states. But he DOES suggest the all-powerful creator of the universe thinks so... "Don't blame me. I didn't write Deuteronomy." mmm...hmmm....
I was particularly unconvinced by his argument about Saul confering with a medium to call up the spirit of Samuel, claiming it wasn't samuel, it was a demon. Very weak argument, there. In any case, despite some of his textual citations and interpretations, I did find this book interesting and certainly food for thought.
